2/27/2010: Shakin' Not Stirred Album Release
Time: 7:00 PM Place: Linen Building 1402 W. Grove St. Boise, Idaho Self-titled album, the eclectic folk/swing band's first official release, will be performed in its entirety at the party Shakin' Not Stirred will launch its self-titled debut during an album release party at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Linen Building in Boise's Linen District. Tickets are $7 in advance or day of show. Advance tickets are now available online at brownpapertickets.com/event/98629. All ages, full bar (ID required). At last, this eclectic folk/swing band is launching its first album, Shakin' Not Stirred. There's no better excuse to party, so the public is invited to come down to the Linen Building to celebrate with Michelle, Dominique, Dan and Josh as they perform the album in its entirety with special guests. Like a good cocktail, Shakin' Not Stirred goes down smooth but delivers a wallop - an acoustic and vocal concoction of original, soulful folk and classic swing/jazz covers. The band's three-part harmonies, accompanied by guitars, bass and mandolin, sneak up on you like dry gin, but you always feel good the next morning. Some liken Shakin' Not Stirred to a homegrown cross between Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks and The Wailin' Jennys. A good portion of the material on the CD is original, and the musicians rearrange their covers for a fresh, unique sound. On stage, the group's contagious good humor and energetic performances inspired Idaho Statesman columnist Diane Ronayne to write, "It's as if they KNOW this is supposed to be fun."

3/3/2010 - 3/4/2010: Forestry & Climate Conference
Climate Change, Bioenergy & Sustaining the Forests of Idaho & Montana This conference will help people connect global-scale issues regarding climate change, renewable energy, and carbon emissions to potential effects on forests in Idaho and Montana. March 3-4, 2010 Washington Group Plaza Boise, Idaho Registration Fee: $65.00 Discussions will center on strategies for sustaining our forests and the services people expect from them. The sustainability premise: The current and future condition of our forests determines their ability to contribute to our society’s energy security, climate change mitigation and resilience goals. Current conditions in the forested areas of Idaho and Montana put forests risk of stand-replacing wildfire as well as insect and disease outbreaks. Management actions could improve forest conditions and help meet renewable energy and carbon sequestration goals. Forest management actions must be ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially desirable to be sustainable. Towards a “social license”: Forest managers can take action to meet these three sustainability conditions only after attaining a “social license” for implementation. Several efforts are underway in this region to create such “licenses”. The stories behind these efforts are encouraging and perhaps could be applied more widely, if more people knew about them. We need to consider what is needed to build additional social license or cooperative capacity to move more rapidly in practical, common sense ways. For the flyer click here.
